Sheriff badge freeFollowing are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Monday, Oct. 31: At 6:46 am, a deputy was dispatched to the 300 block of S. Wise St in Paton to investigate the theft of property from a vehicle. At 9:54 am a deputy was advised by a Scranton city employee of suspicious activity at the city park shelter house.

Sunday, Oct. 30: At 2:30 am a deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner on Highway 4 at 190th St in Hardin Township. After an investigation the deputy subsequently arrested Brianna Taylor Wirtz, 21, of West Des Moines for operating while intoxicated- first offense. At 11:29 am a deputy and the Scranton fire department were dispatched to a garage fire in the 1000 block of Grant St in Scranton. At 12:59 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1100 block of Orchard Ave in Hardin Township for a trespassing concern. At 8:27 pm a deputy and a Jefferson police officer responded for the report of a suspicious vehicle in the ditch, with the driver and a passenger of that vehicle harassing and fighting with a resident in the 1800 block of T Ave in Junction Township. The subjects had fled the scene before the deputy’s arrival. The driver and passenger were later located at a residence in Rippey. At 10:50 pm a deputy and the Churdan fire department were dispatched for a minor electrical house fire in the 300 block of Hill St in Churdan. At 11:23 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of Sand St in Churdan for a backing accident at the fire station. At 11:47 pm a deputy spoke with a Dana resident about a harassment concern.

Saturday, Oct. 29: At 5:02 pm a deputy and Grand Junction fire and rescue were dispatched for a two vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of T Ave and 250th St in Junction Township. Bryce Eugene Hoyle, 16, of rural Grand Junction was southbound on T Ave driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala LS when a westbound 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 being driven by Jon Wade Leonard, 52, of Carroll, struck his vehicle in the intersection. Hoyle was able to exit his Impala after it ended up in the south west ditch of the intersection, catching fire. Hoyle sustained a minor knee injury. Leonard was not injured but his Chevrolet pickup pulling a 2008 H and H Trailer sustained major damage. Leonard was issued a citation for failure to yield to the right.

Friday, Oct. 28: At 5:41 pm a deputy was advised of a combine on fire in the 1100 block of 244th St in Jackson Township. The combine, which was owned by Jon Morlan of rural Jefferson, was estimated to be a total loss. At 11:10 pm, a deputy was dispatched for a minor car-deer accident that occurred on Highway 144 near 190th St in Junction Township. No accident report was needed and the vehicle was driven from the scene.

Thursday, Oct. 27: At 2:24 pm a deputy assisted an Iowa State trooper with a single vehicle accident south of Rippey on W Ave near 320th St in Washington Township. The driver of the vehicle was Jennifer Nicole Debord, 28, of Dawson. Debord was transported to the Dallas County Hospital by Greene County Emergency Medical Services with unknown injuries.

Wednesday, Oct. 26: Routine activity reported.

Tuesday, Oct. 25: At 5:04 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1800 block of County Road E-57 (315th St) in Franklin Township for a reported dog running at large. At 5:28 pm a deputy was dispatched to the Paton Pit Stop in Paton for a gas drive off. The described vehicle was not located at that time. At 8:03 pm a deputy assisted a Jefferson police officer with a call in the 300 block of S. Grimmell Road in Jefferson.

Monday, Oct. 24: At 9:24 am a deputy was asked to check several semi-tractor trailers that were parked off the roadway on Highway 30 near County Road P-46 (W Ave). It was reported to the sheriff’s office that they were obstructing the view of drivers wanting to enter Highway 30 from P-46. At 11:33 am and 1:16 pm, four members of the Greene County sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol assisted the Jefferson police department with executing two search warrants in Jefferson. At 7:30 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 300 block of Anyer St in Dana, for a harassment concern. At 10:50 pm a deputy transported Jacob Ore, 39, of Jefferson to the Carroll-Greene County line to be to be taken into custody by a Carroll County deputy on outstanding Carroll County warrants. Ore was arrested earlier in the evening by a JPD officer.

Sunday, Oct. 23: At 2:20 am a deputy was dispatched for a car-deer accident that occurred on Highway 30 near Hillcrest Ave west of Jefferson. Joshua David Raymond, 21, of Marshalltown was eastbound on Highway 30 when a deer ran into the side of his 2012 Chevrolet Cruze LS. Raymond was not injured but his car sustained an estimated $4,000 in damages. At 5:03 pm a deputy initiated a traffic stop for speeding on 310th St and Highway 25 in Willow Township and subsequently arrested Dakota Rae Sheer, 24, of Bayard for driving while revoked*. She was also issued citations for excessive speed, a registration violation and failure to provide security against liability. At 6:32 pm a deputy is investigating the driver of a vehicle who was reported to be driving while revoked in Churdan. At 9:02 pm two deputies assisted a JPD officer with a call at the Cobblestone Hotel in Jefferson. At 9:26 pm a deputy is investigating a harassment concern in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Oct. 22: At 10:09 am a deputy was advised and spoke with a resident in the 700 block of State St in Scranton about a harassment concern. At 11:49 am a deputy assisted a JPD officer with a call in the 400 block of N. Olive St in Jefferson. At 1:06 pm a deputy assisted a JPD officer with the violation of a no contact order at a residence in the 300 block of N. Chestnut St in Jefferson. At 1:53 pm a deputy was advised of several off-road dirt bikes being ridden on the roadway in the 1400 block of D Ave in Scranton Township. At 5:42 pm a deputy was dispatched to a single vehicle rollover accident that occurred on Highway 144 (U Ave) near 150th St in Paton Township. Marcy Jeanne Burkhead, 60, of Urbandale was southbound on Highway 144 when she was distracted and lost control of her 2003 Buick Park Avenue. The car entered the west ditch, hitting a farm field drive way, causing the car to roll onto its top. Burkhead was not injured but her car was estimated to be a total loss. At 6:16 pm a deputy was unable to locate two dogs that were reported to be running at large on South 11th St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Oct. 20: At 9:19 am the chief deputy sheriff was dispatched to the 600 block of N. 18th St in Grand Junction to investigate the theft of electricity by way of a tampered meter at the residence. At 9:46 am the sheriff investigated the report of criminal mischief and trespassing around a home in the 1000 block of High St in Scranton. At 5:56 pm a deputy was advised by a Scranton resident of purchasing a puppy online for $300 and after sending a money order for that amount, was then advised that he was to send $760 for pet insurance to ship the animal. He did not comply with the latter dollar amount. The deputy called the phone number that was given and the call was promptly terminated when the deputy identified himself.

Wednesday, Oct. 19: At 1:09 pm the Webster County sheriff’s office advised the Greene County sheriff’s office of locating and arresting Joseph Donald Andrews, 32, of Gowrie on outstanding warrants from Greene County. The Greene County deputy took custody of Andrews at the Webster-Greene County line. At 1:47 pm the chief deputy sheriff investigated the report of several dirt bikes being ridden on the roadway near County Road P-14 (J Ave) and 240th St in Jackson Township.

Tuesday, Oct. 18: At 7:33 pm a deputy was asked to put down an injured deer that had been struck by a vehicle on County Road N-65 (D Ave) near County Road E-19 (140 St) in Cedar Township. At 7:53 am the Greene County sheriff’s office was advised of criminal mischief and vandalism to a farm tractor in the 100 block of 230th St in Scranton Township. At 3:56 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 800 block of Main St in Scranton to investigate criminal mischief to a youth bicycle. At 6:11 pm a deputy responded to a reported fight in progress at the Casey’s General Store parking lot in Grand Junction. The two male subjects were identified and questioned as to the cause of the altercation. At 6:41 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of South 9th St in Grand Junction for a reported suspicious male subject selling an unknown product. The deputy spoke with the male and advised him to register with the city before selling his products.

Monday, Oct. 17: At 10:04 am the Greene County sheriff’s office was advised of an out of state person that was known to be hitch hiking through Iowa and his location was not known to relatives. At 10:26 am a deputy was advised of a trespassing and harassment concern in the 400 block of 140th St in Cedar Township. At 3:25 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 600 block of Hager St East in Grand Junction to investigate the report of the illegal burning of materials within the city limits. At 4:14 pm a deputy was advised of the burglary to a farm building site in the 500 block of 250th St in Scranton Township. At 7:58 pm, a deputy and an Iowa State Patrol officer responded to a trespassing concern in the 600 block of 150th St in Cedar Township. After an investigation, the deputy and the trooper subsequently arrested Jeffery Paul Olberding, 50, of rural Scranton for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and trespassing*. At 10 pm a deputy was advised of several semi-tractor trailer grain haulers driving at excessive speeds through Paton. A DOT enforcement officer was also advised of the concern.

Sunday, Oct. 16: At 10:32 am a deputy investigated the theft of tools from a residence in the 100 block of N. Wise St in Paton. At 2:03 pm a deputy checked a suspicious vehicle that had been parked in front of the library in Rippey for an extended amount of time. The vehicle, the driver and a passenger were located and an identity of both was determined. They advised the deputy that they were using the Wi-Fi from the library. At 2:32 pm a deputy was advised of criminal mischief to a corn field in Farlin. At 3:50 pm a deputy investigated criminal mischief and vandalism by spray painting graffiti at the Scranton Township Cemetery. At 4:54 pm a deputy spoke with a resident in the 300 block of 130th St in Cedar Township about a harassment concern. At 8:33 pm a deputy investigated a gas drive off and the theft of fuel from the Sparky’s One Stop in Rippey. The described vehicle was not located. At 11:28 pm a deputy was assisted by an Iowa State Patrol officer with investigating a single vehicle accident in the 600 block of Highway 144 in Paton Township. Paloma Perez, 19, of Perry reported she was southbound on Highway 144 when a deer ran in front of her vehicle and she drove into the east ditch, striking a building site driveway. Perez was not injured but her 2004 Ford was reported to be a total loss.

Saturday, Oct. 15: At 11:08 am a Churdan resident brought a stray dog to the law enforcement center for placement into the animal shelter. A JPD officer assisted the deputy with that placement. At 12:30 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 500 block of S. Wise St in Paton to investigate criminal mischief and vandalism to the tires on a vehicle. At 8:05 pm a deputy was dispatched to Scranton to determine the operators of three dirt bikes that were operating without lights. The bikes and riders were located and the riders were advised by the deputy that after the first warning the bikes would be towed and impounded with citations to follow.

Friday, Oct. 14: At 3:23 pm a deputy was advised of a vehicle that had driven into the ditch to avoid slower moving farm machinery on P Ave near Dana. The vehicle was towed without incident or injury. At 3:24 pm a deputy was advised of debris on Highway 30 near the Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. It was reported that two trucks side-swiped each other and the debris was their respective drivers mirrors. At 8:13 pm a deputy checked a vehicle on County Road E-53 (235th St near Pioneer Ave) that had struck a deer. The driver reported that he had someone coming to assist with the vehicles removal.

Thursday, Oct. 13: At 3:06 pm the Greene County sheriff’s office was advised of a phone scam, with the caller asking that out of date pain medications be sent back to the pharmaceutical manufacturer at a given address. Do not give or send your prescription medications to anyone!! (Editor’s note – Outdated or unused medication can be dropped off for disposal at the law enforcement center at any time.) At 5:30 pm the sheriff was advised of the possible theft of personal property from a building in the 200 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Oct. 12: At 4:36 am a deputy was dispatched to the 500 block of S. Wise St in Paton for a reported harassment concern. At 10:30 am a deputy was advised of suspicious activity in the 1900 block of 277th St in Junction Township. At 12:56 pm a deputy was assisted by the JPD, Jefferson fire department and Greene County EMS with an accident at the intersection of Mulberry St and Highway 30. Maurice Eldon Wistenberg, 78, of Jefferson was southbound on Mullberry St. He reported he stopped as posted and then continued into the intersection. Ayana Tahirah Pusha, 33, of Savannah, GA, was eastbound on Highway 30. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Pusha was transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County EMS with minor injuries. Wistenberg was transported by private vehicle to the medical center for observation. Wistenberg was cited for failure to yield upon entering a through intersection. Wistenberg’s 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck and Pusha’s 2016 Toyota were both estimated to be total losses. At 3:45 pm a deputy was advised of the theft of a vehicle that was taken without the owner’s consent in the 2000 block of 295th St in Washington Township. At 6:46 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 500 block of 11th Street S in Grand Junction to investigate the report of several youth walking down the street shooting air soft guns at trees. The deputy located the boys and spoke with their parents. The deputy advised them of the public’s concern about the real looking pistols and discharging them within the city.

Tuesday, Oct. 11: At 7:58 am a deputy checked the report of cattle along the roadway on 110th Street near K Ave in Highland Township. The deputy put the calf back into the pasture. At 8:08 am a deputy was dispatched to the 1900 block of 277th St in Junction Township to investigate a burglary and the theft of personal property. At 10:25 am a deputy is investigating threatening Snapchat messages that were sent by a Greene County resident to someone living in another county. At 12:42 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1100 block of R Ave in Hardin Township to investigate the burglary to a machine shed. Nothing appears to have been taken. At 2:23 pm a deputy is investigating a forced entry into a building in the 1900 block of Neola Ave in Grant Township. At 5:18 pm a deputy assisted a motorist experiencing a medical condition that was parked along the roadway on Highway 30 near Hillcrest Ave west of Jefferson. Greene County Emergency Medical Services personnel were also dispatched to transport the female to the Greene County Medical Center ER.

Monday, Oct. 10: At 8:09 am a deputy was advised of the theft of a grain bin dryer fan from a bin site in the 2200 block of M Ave in Greenbrier Township. The theft is under investigation at this time. At 2:06 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1000 block of Grant St in Scranton for a reported domestic altercation. After an investigation by the deputy, he subsequently arrested Robert Oscar Whitenack, 35, and Patricia Ann Haynes, 33, both of Scranton, for domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness*. Also arrested and taken into custody at that time was Erla Beth Whitenack, 64, of Westside for assault*.  At 5:07 pm a deputy was dispatched to the intersection of 270th St and F Ave in Jackson Township for a two vehicle accident. Bret David Kersey, 23, of Grand Junction reported he was eastbound on 270th St while Connie Marie Hoffman, 54, of rural Scranton was southbound on F Ave. Hoffman entered the intersection striking the Kersey pickup. No injuries were reported to either driver. Hoffman was cited for failure to yield to the vehicle on the right. Damage to her Buick was estimated to be $2,000. Damage to Kersey’s Dodge pickup truck was estimated to be $2,000. At 7:21 pm a deputy was dispatched for a minor car-deer accident that occurred on Highway 30 near R Ave west of Grand Junction. The vehicle was driven from the scene.

Sunday, Oct. 9: At 4:37 pm a deputy was advised of an abandoned dog at Spring Lake Park. The dog was voluntarily taken to a shelter in Perry by another camper. At 4:47 pm a deputy assisted a JPD officer in locating a semi-tractor trailer that struck a utility pole while making a right hand turn off of Lincoln Way onto N. Cedar St in Jefferson. The truck and driver were located at the Landus Cooperative. At 7:11 pm a deputy checked a vehicle that had driven into the ditch to keep from striking the rear of other vehicles that were abruptly stopping to keep from hitting a slow moving semi-tractor trailer being towed. The driver was not injured and no damage was reported to her car.

Saturday, Oct. 8: At 2:34 pm a deputy and Grand Junction fire and rescue were dispatched to a farm field fire just east of Dana. A farm tractor and disk was used to control the fire before the fire department’s arrival. At 3:33 pm a deputy investigated a burglary and theft of tools from a building site in the 1900 block of 277th St in Junction Township.

Friday, Oct. 7: At 2:43 am a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of S. 8th St in Grand Junction to speak with the resident about a harassment concern. At 10:56 am a deputy initiated a traffic stop on 9th St in Grand Junction and subsequently arrested Zachery Allen Waters, 20, of Grand Junction on a previous outstanding Greene County warrant and new charges including driving while suspend and possession of drug paraphernalia*. He was cited for failure to provide proof of financial liability. At 11:47 am a deputy was advised of a dog running at large in the 700 block of Sand St in Churdan. The dog was transported by the deputy to the animal shelter in Jefferson. At 2:20 pm a deputy was asked to pick up a stray dog from a residence in the 900 block of D Avenue and transported it to the animal shelter in Jefferson.

Thursday, Oct. 6: At 8:43 am a deputy was asked to remove a deer carcass from the roadway on County Road E- 57 (235th St) east of Jefferson. At 10:21 am a deputy was dispatched to the baseball field in Rippey for a reported suspicious vehicle parked on the property. The driver reported that she was tired and pulled in to rest. At 10:40 am a deputy was dispatched to the 1300 block of 210th St in Hardin Township to investigate a burglary and theft of personal property. At 6:44 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 300 block of 4th St in Rippey for a reported burglary and theft of tools and equipment.

Wednesday, Oct. 5: At 10:45 am a deputy was dispatched to the 300 block of S. 19th St in Grand Junction to investigate criminal mischief to a vehicle. At 10:20 pm a deputy assisted a Jefferson police officer with responding to a domestic call in the 800 block of W. Washington St in Jefferson.

Tuesday, Oct. 4: At 1:39 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of Head St in Churdan to investigate an identity theft resulting in a credit card fraud.

Monday, Oct. 3: At 2:12 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1200 block of 290th St in Greenbrier Township for two dogs reported to be running at large. One of the dogs was located and transported to the animal shelter in Jefferson. At 5:23 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 300 block of 18th St in Grand Junction to investigate a harassment concern. At 6:01 pm a deputy was dispatched to the Casey’s General Store in Scranton to check the welfare of a male subject that was thought to need medical attention. The male refused medical services.

Sunday, Oct. 2: At 12:17 pm a deputy was asked to check the welfare of several small dogs in the 1000 block of T Ave in Junction Township. At 6:15 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 500 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction to investigate a harassment concern.

Saturday, Oct. 1: At 1:33 am a deputy was advised by a semi driver that he nearly struck an off road race car that was being driven on Highway 144 just south of Paton. The vehicle was not located at that time. At 1:51 pm a deputy was assisted by a Jefferson police officer in checking the status of a transient male subject who was lying along Highway 30 at L Ave west of Jefferson. The male subject was later transported to the Greene County Medical Center ER by Greene County EMS for a medical evaluation. At 12:52 pm a deputy was advised of a dog running at large in the 800 block of County Road E-63 (330th St) in Greenbrier Township. The described dog was not located at that time.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
